SOCIAL STUDIES & HISTORY
Information by Country
This
site by the Library of Congress brings together online resources from
collaborative and individual digital libraries from around the
world. Use the Portals of the World link to browse resources by country.
The CIA World FactBook
offers a wide variety of information for every country in the world,
from maps, to population statistics, and even information for specific
governments.
Confinder is a site that allows you to look up the constitution of any country in the world.
U.S. Government
Kids in the House is made by the House of Representatives to help explain what the U.S. government does and how it works.
Ben's
Guide to U.S. Government for Kids is a site created by the U.S.
Government Printing Office. It helps to explain different aspects of
the government in a way that makes sense to kids.
Presidential Timeline of the Twentieth Century gives a listing and
photo of every president from Herbert Hoover to Bill Clinton. The
interactive timeline also uses the presidential libraries to provide
details of important events in each presidency.
POTUS, or Presidents of the United States
is a site created by the Internet Public Library, that provides
information on all forty-three U.S. Presidents. Each page
includes a brief biography of the president, links to major events
during the presidency, and links to each member of his presidential
cabinet. The alphabetical names index is another way to access
the information about people in POTUS.
Newsweek Education provides information on CURRENT EVENTS related to the United States, including political cartoons.
U.S. History
This site offers resources on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It
includes digital copies of his personal papers and some chapters of his
autobiography.
American
Memory is a site by the Library of Congress that puts original sources
like maps, videos, audio, and pictures on the web. Exhibits
include many aspects of American life, including the entrance of Jackie
Robinson into Major League Baseball.
Social Studies
The
Encyclopedia of Women's Studies is easy to use and provides
information on women from many different disciplines. You will
need your library card number to use this tool.
Reading & English/Language Arts
Children's
 The
International Children's Digital Library is a site that has many
digitized picture books available for free. Books are organized
by age group, color, country where they come from, and length.
 The Children's Digital Library gives links to games and activities for children that are available on the web.
Teens
Novelist is
a database that helps readers choose new books to read based on what
they have liked in the past. By entering in a book or author,
other suggestions by the same author or by other authors that are
related, one may browse books to find new and interesting ones to read. You will need your library card number to use this site.
MATH & SCIENCE
Cogito is a site for Johns Hopkins CTY camp, their tools page offers a long list of links that are helpful for math and science.
Science.gov
is a site that brings together scientific information from different
government agencies, e.g. NASA and the EPA. The page can be
searched for information or browsed by subject within science.
Science Buddies organizes
science projects by subject and indicates level of difficulty for each project.
Includes sources for further research as well as a list of materials and a
procedure.
The Princeton Review offers some free materials for SAT preparation.
The College Board offers official
preparation for the SAT. These include practice tests,
preparation for the Mathematics portion, as well as a question of the
day.
Number2.com provides free practice for the SAT, ACT, and GRE. Registration is required.
